Summit of Mt. Whitney 1980
Once in awhile I would head off with a partner to climb one of the Sierra Nevada’s peaks outside the park. Standing on the highest point in the lower 48 at 14, 495′ above sea level on a perfect day in August. We topped out from the nearly vertical East Face to find a gaggle of 30 or so hikers who had labored up the trail, shouting and pointing their cameras at us. So much for an otherwise solitary and blissful day, but at least we had someone to hand OUR camera to.
